Cattle

Our cattle, which are generally Belgian Blue and Simmental crosses, are all reared on the farm. Our animal welfare standards are high and we try very hard to keep all our animals in humane and stress free conditions.

The cattle eat a mixed diet of: rolled wheat and barley; potatoes; fodder beet; and peas. The peas add extra protein to the diet and avoid the need to buy in soya which is generally genetically modified.

None of our crops are genetically modified.

All of our cattle are registered on the British Cattle Movement System; they all have their own passport which records any movements. This makes their whole lives fully traceable.

We grow all the feed ourselves, on the farm. We are therefore able not just to offer traceability of the animal itself but also what it has eaten.

A lot of animals are transported around the country before they are slaughtered. The meat is then often transported to a cutting plant and then perhaps on to a distribution warehouse, before final delivery to the point of sale e.g. the supermarket.

We use a local abattoir just 3 miles away. This short journey not only minimises stress for the animals, but also helps to reduce the pollution normally caused by the transportation of food all over the country (and even world!).

All of the animals are registered
on the Cattle Tracing System,
this is run by the
British Cattle Movement Service
(BCMS)
and are, therefore, fully traceable.
